Metro Town Park
Adaptive reuse and redesign were used to give a shopping complex on the former factory estate MCGSNS undertook the task of revitalizing a shopping complex located on the grounds of a former factory estate in Shanghai through adaptive reuse and redesign. The outcome is the newly transformed Metro Town Park, which embraces a post-industrial theme. The team prioritized salvaging and preserving as much of the original structure as possible, resulting in a revitalized community hub. The renovated complex features theatrical lighting, a sunlit indoor courtyard, and advanced MEP systems, enabling the building to achieve net-zero annual energy consumption. MCGSNS’s involvement in the project was extensive, encompassing interior design, structural upgrades, and landscaping. Recognizing the significance of the exterior, equal attention was given to enhancing its appeal. The project serves as an impressive case study in repurposing underperforming and abandoned factories throughout the city. Metro Town Park incorporates an industrial-inspired design, blending retail, dining, and entertainment offerings. The mall’s design creates a vibrant atmosphere that particularly appeals to a younger demographic. Strategic use of color was employed to accentuate the trusses and mezzanine, reducing the visual height without compromising the overall experience. Site-specific art, collaboratively commissioned with local artists, establishes connections between different areas within the complex. By juxtaposing industrial architectural elements with contemporary urban art installations, a captivating contrast is achieved. This combination creates a visually stimulating environment, encourages community engagement, and provides visitors with a memorable and immersive experience.
